Characteristics and Core Values
Have you ever really thought about the values/characteristics you want your children to grow up with? I attended a seminar in Orlando recently and it really made me think, A LOT about this. I haven't been focusing on the exact values/characteristics I want my children to have. Sure Alex and I have thoughts about what we want to teach our kids but it was never really thought out, defined WHY and intentionally put into practice on an everyday basis.
These are a few that I have written down that is important to me(in no order of importance).
Finite nature of time:(appreciate the NOW moment)
Humility(being humble with oneself, having a clear perspective, and therefore respect, for one's place in context.)
Spirituality(subjective experience and psychological growth. It may refer to almost any kind of meaningful activity or blissful experience, but without a single, widely-agreed definition.)
Education:The importance of knowledge and putting in to practice.
Love:A virtue representing human kindness, compassion, and affection—"the unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another". Compassionate and affectionate actions towards other humans, one's self or animals.
Kindness: ethical characteristics, a pleasant disposition, and concern for others.
Worldly:practical experience and knowledge about life and the world.
Compassion:sympathetic consciousness of others' distress together with a desire to alleviate it.
Empathy:understanding and sharing another person's experiences and emotions.
Integrity:the quality of being honest and fair and the state of being complete or whole.
Self-Aware:understanding and knowledge of who they are including their skills, values, interests, behaviors and character.
Goal Focused – The ability to have clarity on the objectives that you strive for in your personal and professional life.
These are ONLY a handful of values that I want to teach my boys. Through OUR actions as parents is what will help instill these CORE values into our kids. The only control we have is what we can do as parents. To me, CORE values and character building is of UTMOST importance for our family. You can be wicked smart but if you don't hold true to your core values, you will NEVER be a happy successful person.
